Creating Something New

The world is full of beauty. As participants in the world, human beings have created many things with the intention of adding to that beauty. This is one of the reasons we create art. These pages are about some of my attempts to contribute to the beauty of our world . . . .

Since I was young, I have been intrigued by the lathe. There is something that has always drawn me to making things that are round. At the age of about 10, I persuaded my dad to get me a small wood lathe. I can remember trying to think of things to make. I sure made a lot of little baseball bats! So now, as you may have noticed, all the items in these pages have been turned on the lathe.

I don't remember where the initial inspiration to carve stone came from, but it seems to have been some time in 2004. I acquired some alabaster to carve a small sculpture but I didn't get too far along with it.

Then some time later, I was doing a job at work that involved using some redwood burl. There were some pieces left over and I thought of making a small bowl. In the process of making the bowl, it dawned on me that I could make a stone liner for the bowl using the alabaster I had for carving. I had never seen anything like it so I gave it a try. That was the beginning of what you see here . . . .
